Getting to Know Eastern PA Illustrators

Virginia Manning2 Comments

In September 2017 I became the illustrator coordinator for the Eastern PA chapter of SCBWI. It's the perfect role for me because I love organizing events for friends with similar interests. As the EPA IC, I'm also relishing the opportunity to meet the illustrators in my region and to familiarize myself with their work. There are just over 500 illustrators in Eastern PA who are or were SCBWI members. That's a lot of illustrators! Of those, 83 are 'Published and Listed' or PAL members. I'm making it a goal over the next two years to read as many of their books as possible. In my library bounty this week, I brought home The Secret Life of the Red Fox illustrated by EPA member Kate Garchinsky.

The Secret Life of the Red Fox is narrative non-fiction at its best. The author Laurence Pringle's lively text is perfectly matched with Ms. Garchinsky's beautiful pastel illustrations. Vixen runs and leaps, pursued by dogs; pops in the air; and nose dives into a foot of snow, chasing mice chewing grass below.  We watch Vixen from a distance and encounter her nose to nose in a cramped den. The story, filled with action and tender moments, is sure to be a crowd pleaser.

I'm so happy to become acquainted with this series by Boyds Mills Press and look forward to reading the next installments by this team: The Secret Life of the Little Brown Bat and The Secret Life of the Skunk, as well as Kate's upcoming non-fiction chapter book Belle’s Journey: An Osprey Takes Flight (Charlesbridge) written by Dr. Rob Bierregaard.

Congratulations to EPA SCBWI member Kate Garchinsky on all her success!
